The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) leads public research in innovative solar power technologies. Photovoltaic arrays, or PV for short, harness the sun's power and turn it into electricity. When the sun shines onto a solar panel, photons are absorbed by the cells in the panel, which creates an electric field across the layers. Photovoltaic arrays must be mounted on a stable, durable structure that tilts the PV array at a fixed angle determined by the local latitude. To obtain the highest annual energy output, modules in the northern hemisphere are pointed due south and inclined at an angle equal to the local latitude. Alternatively, automatic mechanisms may be installed to move panels to track the sun across the sky, which provides more energy and a higher return on investment (ROI). Inverters are used to convert the direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar photovoltaic modules into alternating current (AC). Finally, large batteries allow for the storage of solar photovoltaic energy when bad weather blocks sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic panels.
Organic PV, or OPV, cells are composed of carbon-rich polymers and can be tailored to enhance a specific function of the cell, such as sensitivity to a certain type of light. This technology has the theoretical potential to provide electricity at a lower cost than silicon or thin-film technologies. Concentration PV, also known as CPV, focuses sunlight onto a solar cell by using a mirror or lens. By focusing sunlight onto a small area, less PV material is required. This technology uses mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto receivers that collect solar energy and convert it to heat, which can then be used to produce electricity.

Aerospace Engineering Programs
Aerospace engineers may design aircraft, space vehicles, satellites, and missile systems. In addition, they test prototypes to make sure that they function according to design. Aerospace engineers are employed in building, analysis and design of commercial aircraft, missile systems for national defense, or spaceships. Aerospace engineers are employed primarily in manufacturing, research and development, and must have a bachelors degree in aerospace engineering or another related field. In addition, aerospace engineers that work on projects that are related to national defense will need a security clearance.Aerospace operations technicians and mechanics, on the other hand, need only an associates degree to begin earning a good salary. They operate and maintain equipment used in developing, testing, and producing new aircraft and spacecraft. Increasingly, these workers must be able to use computer-based modeling (CAD) and simulation tools in their work. Certification is offered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Both companies and the FAA seek to ensure the highest standards for the safety of the aircraft. In fact, SpaceTEC, the National Science Foundation Center for Aerospace Technical Education, coordinates a nationwide program through community and technical colleges to help students prepare for certification. The median annual wage for aerospace engineers with a bachelors degree was $107,830, while aircraft technicians and mechanics holding an associate's degree earned $66,180, as of May 2015.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.Job listings below are updated hourly: | Starting Salary (up to) | 10 Year Salary (up to) |
